Legal medical cannabis (including CBD and THC formulations) as an alternative medicine has increased in interest over the past decade. Clinical studies on medicinal cannabis is limited, so many doctors (especially GPs) find it difficult to justify prescribing it.

As of 2016, yes CBD oil in Australia is legal, but is highly restricted and regulated. CBD oil is legal as long as it contains at least 98% cannabidiol and < 2% of other cannabinoids found in cannabis. Australia is far behind other countries in terms of cannabis regulation. The government however, particularly the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), has made efforts to listen to consumers and improve the process.
So how do you actually get CBD oil?
The process of getting CBD oil can be difficult for an individual alone. It can be a tiresome process, involving several steps:
Find a GP or specialist.
Hope the doctor is well-educated in medicinal cannabis.
Try to convince them that CBD oil is what you need to treat your condition.
Have the doctor fill out a complicated medicinal cannabis application and send it to the TGA.
Find a pharmacy with your prescription and TGA approval letter and try to order the oil.
Convince the pharmacy to order the CBD oil for you (some are not willing to order cannabis products).
